The Delta Expo

Domburg is only 20 km from the Delta Expo, the exhibit about the gigantic engineering project that protects the Netherlands from flooding.  So we rented a bakfiets and a kindertandem to go see it.  The kindertandem is a tandem designed for a grown-up and a child to ride together.

The bike path took us through the dune woods, along some fields with grazing sheep, through a small town where we stopped for lunch and then over the giant storm surge barrier built after the catastrophic floods of 1953.  After about 3 hours of serious pedalling we made it to the Delta Expo.

The Expo had a film about the 1953 flood, exhibits about the historical creation of Zeeland by draining the sea and, of course, about the storm surge barrier we had just ridden across.

Outside at the Expo we saw a seal show, walked through a whale building and played in the water park.

It took only 70 minutes to ride back to Domburg with the wind at our backs.  We were ready for our pancake dinner!

A Long Ride in the Dunes

It may have been cold and windy a couple of Saturdays ago, but it was sunny so we went for a ride in the Dunes.  It turns out that there’s a pancake restaurant in the middle of the nature park, so of course we stopped, if only to warm up.  Actually, it’s hardly surprising that there’d be a restaurant.  You’re never far from a snack in the Netherlands.   The pannenkoekenhuis had pancakes, hot chocolate with whipped cream, and…. gnomes!

The thing that the Dunes are missing, though, is maps.  We got a little turned around finding our way back so William ended up biking at least 12 km, if not more.  He got a little tired and hitched a ride with the bakfiets part of the way.

William’s 1st bike Ride

Today it was finally nice enough for a ride on my new bike with my new helmet.  Mommy took me out to the dunes (where there are no cars) to try out my new bike. It was great.  The bike is a little tall so it is a little challenging to stop without tipping over.  I biked down to the water tower and back (2 kilometers) while Henry ran along side in support.  I really like the handbrakes, although it is hard to reach them with my little fingers. I just can hold 2 things yet.
